Elizabeth Cunningham was an elected member of Environment Canterbury for three years from 2004. My close association with the development of the Opuha Water Storage Dam developed the experience I bring to Environment Canterbury, with an in depth understanding of the economic and environmental benefits of good water management and a collaborative community process. I undertake to continue to work towards a sustainable future where farming activity works in concert with the environment and does not degrade it through inadequate monitoring and enforcement. I have been closely involved with the Canterbury Water Management Strategy for the last five years at a local and regional level.
I stand for a common sense approach to regulations, with achievable timeframes for practical solutions to be implemented. I have been involved with the Canterbury Water Management Strategy locally and regionally. I am approachable, an effective communicator, committed to transparent and consultative engagement and problem solving that achieves fair and constructive results. We need greater enforcement on resource consent breaches and stronger policy to ensure our polluted waterways get cleaned up. I’m committed to policy that provides for the needs of future citizens, which means addressing climate change and investing in modern, world class public transport, and I am working to deliver an environmental legacy we can all be proud of. I bring to this role my scientific training in ecology PhD UTAS M. Sci 1st class hons Lincoln and the experience of working as a Science Advisor for the Department of Conservation in the Waikato.
I am committed to working as a Treaty Partner, of living sustainably and working collaboratively. As an ECan councillor I relish being part of a team that works to build flourishing communities and businesses and find smarter, sustainable solutions to problems of clean water, clean air and clean transport. I have been working with others to establish the Canterbury Water Management Strategy CWMS since 2008 and I firmly believe I can initiate informed change, particularly concerning water management. He is currently an Environment Canterbury Councillor with portfolio responsibilities for all planning and resource management processes.
He was a member of the Technical Advisory Group appointed by the Government in 2011 to review sections 6 and 7 of the Resource Management Act 1991 and to advise on improved legislative provisions for natural hazard planning. We work in partnership with the communities of Canterbury to promote the sustainable management of our resources. Sustainable management means that we use innovative, cost effective and technically excellent methods and ensure that our decision making is based on the highest quality information.
