What you should know about BlAck River Stud
While we were farming on the Chatham Islands, much of our stock work was undertaken on horseback and we bred horses to suit this purpose. Black River’ found its beginning as a stud by breeding pinto horses using a home bred stallion, Rekohu Chieftain. The breeding focus of the stud changed in 2008 and Black River Welsh Cobs was established with the purchase of Welsh Cob mare, El Alpha Jay Lo. The next step was finding a Welsh Cob stallion and in 2009 the exciting purchase of a colt was made, Arawa Sir Ed, bred by Jenny Davison from all imported blood lines. Welsh Cobs had long appealed for their strength, agility, spirit and beauty.
The passion for Welsh Cobs was caught by other members of my family together with my mother and sister, we have built up a small herd of mares which serve as both ridden mounts and broodmares
Bella has already been highly successful, both in hand with her beginning owner Leigh, and now lower saddle as a dressage, jumping and divulge mount for her new owner Renee. Black River Lady Jay Baby Jay is a beautiful flaxen chestnut mare who has looks, substance and athletic ability. Black River Indian Magic Jack is a registered chestnut tovero NZ Pinto Horse. Pen Kant jubilee has been awarded many Champions and Supreme Champions in the Saddle Cob and Welsh Cob rings with her preceding owner, Isabel MacArthur.
Black River optimum Beau is an athletic, Welsh Partbred Horse and packed sibling to Dark River Olympia and Dark River Orion. Dark River Nevello Kiwi is an athletic NZ Warmblood who has been retained by the stud as a riding horse and coming competitive mount. Raewyn bred Jobs to their Section C stallion Barron Reflection Imp to bear Al Alpha Jay Lo who was purchased as Dark River Welsh Cobs first Section D mare. He has been started under saddle and has proved to be a quick, keen learner.
She is a full sibling to Dark River Indian Rose and Dark River Indian Magic. Ardachy Winnie is a gorgeous 14hh chestnut roan mare with an superb head and mighty hindquarters. Dismal River Welsh Cobs aims to breed quality Section D Welsh Cobs and larger Welsh Partbreds. Kiwi has been started lower saddle and is progressing healthy in his training.
Black River Welsh Guard Wthyr pronounced BO’ Ch ea’r was the beginning purebred Section D Welsh Cob to be bred by Dark River Welsh Cobs. Face Arawak Sir Ed, Dark River Welsh Cob’s purebred Section D Welsh Cob stallion. Harry has been started under saddle and it’s incredible to hear he’s progressing healthy at his North Island home. Arawak Sir Ed is a mufti supreme champion in hand and both his spotless and piece bred offspring have steady success in the show ring.
Rosa shows a sincere talent for jumping and is a competitive mount for her owner, George. Tireinon Cadet also happens to be the sire of Dismal River broodmare, Ardachy Winnie. Dark River Olympia Bella is bay, Welsh Partbred Horse and full sibling to Dismal River optimum and Black River Orion. Rekohu Chieftain, our former stallion, and outside stallions used by Dark River Welsh Cobs.
